Prenatal Nutrition
Nutrition during pregnancy is crucial for both the mother and the developing baby. It supports the growth and development of the fetus and helps the mother maintain her own health and well-being. Proper nutrition during these months is important as it shapes the long term health of the baby.

A Prenatal Dietitian can help by providing expert nutrition therapy in order to meet the increased energy needs and nutrient stores of pregnant women. These may be effected by nutrient deficiencies, morning sickness/nausea, increased requirements, weight gain and health conditions such as gestational diabetes and thyroid conditions.
Nutrition requirements change throughout pregnancy, and each trimester has a unique nutrition focus. Pregnancy can also come with discomforts such as heartburn, nausea, morning sickness, constipation and fatigue. Nutrition and adjustments to liquid, food and supplements can play a significant role in improving these symptoms.
Nutrition during pregnancy is also beneficial is reducing the risk of pregnancy complications such as pre-eclampsia, gestational diabetes and iron deficiency anemia.
Adequate nutrition is essential for the proper development of the baby’s organs, brain, and bones. Nutrition also helps ensure a healthy birth weight, reducing the risk of preterm birth and low birth weight, which can lead to complications.
Research has shown that proper nutrition during pregnancy can impact the future health of the baby long term. These include:
- Brain health
- Immune System
- Prevent chronic conditions

FAQs
Are there foods that I should avoid during pregnancy?
Yes, there are some foods that should be avoided during pregnancy to reduce the risk of foodborne illnesses which may cause harm to the baby. These foods include, unpasteurized dairy products, raw and under cooked meats, certain types of fish (that are high in mercury) and raw eggs. During our consultations, we can provide a comprehensive list of foods to avoid and suitable alternatives.
How can I manage morning sickness?
Morning sickness and nausea is common during the first trimester but can occur anytime during pregnancy. During our consultations, we can suggest easy to digest foods that are nutrient dense, as well as liquids and supplements that may improve morning sickness, and ensure you are meeting nutrient requirements for both you and baby. However, please seek medical support if you vomiting worsens and/or you are unable to keep liquids down.
Can I still eat a vegetarian/vegan diet during pregnancy?
Yes, it is still possible to maintain a vegetarian/vegan diet during pregnancy while still meeting nutrient requirements. However, it involves careful planning and nutrient screening to ensure that you are meeting requirements for iron, protein, calcium, vitamin B12 and other essential nutrients. During our consultations, we can work to create a balanced plant based meal plan and incorporating vegetarian/vegan supplements if required.
When should I start taking a prenatal supplement?
It is recommended to start a prenatal supplement at least 3 months before conceiving. This is due to meeting folic acid requirements early on during pregnancy to reduce the risk of neural tube defects and meeting requirements for other essential nutrients for a healthy pregnancy. During our consultations, we can help you find the right prenatal supplement for you based on your individual nutrient requirements.
